The Bocas del Toro Archipelago consists of nine main islands, around 50 cayes and over 200 tiny islets.
Isla Colon is the archipelago’s most developed island and home to the provincial capital of Bocas del Toro. Built by the United Fruit company in the early 20th century, the town is colourful, lively and rustic – full of character and Caribbean-style houses. It offers a vibrant mix of restaurants, bars, shops and nightlife.
Just a 10-minute boat ride from Bocas town, Isla Bastimentos feels like a different world. Its northwest coast features palm-fringed beaches that serve as nesting grounds for sea turtles, while the northern and southern shores are lined with mangroves and coral reefs within the boundaries of the Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park. The island is rich in jungle, Afro-Caribbean culture, and is home to the indigenous Ngöbe-Buglé village of Quebrada Sal. Activities like ziplining, jungle hiking and snorkelling trips are all possible from Bastimentos island.
Bocas del Toro is a top snorkelling and diving destination with outstanding marine biodiversity – including coral reefs, dolphins and tropical fish. It’s also popular for surfing, hiking, kayaking, or simply relaxing and soaking in the tropical Caribbean vibe.
