Getting There

The journey to The Pitcairn Islands is very much a part of the Pitcairn Islands travel experience. Your travel plans should allow plenty of time for connections en route. Firstly, you need to get them to Tahiti in French Polynesia. Generally, they will need at least one night in the capital, Papeete, prior to flying on Air Tahitiā€™s Tuesday flight to Mangareva. We recommend at least two or three nights, just in case of delays.

Air Tahiti operates the only domestic flights to and from the island of Mangareva in the Gambiers, where the Pitcairn Islands Passenger/Supply vessel, MV Silver Supporter is anchored. All Silver Supporter voyages are scheduled to correspond with the airline’s Tuesday flights between Papeete (PPT) and Mangareva (GMR). The flight leaves Papeete around 8.00 am in the morning and lands at Totegegie Airport, located on an islet in the lagoon at Mangareva, around 1.30 pm that same day. From the airport, passengers take the 35-minute shuttle boat across to

Rikitea village where they are met at the wharf by Silver Supporter crew and transferred to the ship.

On-Island Transfers & Transportation

All Pitcairn Accommodation hosts welcome their guests at the Bounty Bay Landing on arrival providing free transfers, generally via 4-wheel Quad Bikes. Quad Bikes are the primary means of transportation on the island. While islanders are skilled riders in all types of weather and road conditions, quads bikes are not designed to carry passengers and accidents can occur. Visitors should be aware that travelling on quad bikes is undertaken at the passengerā€™s own risk. Local safety standards require that no more than 2 passengers per vehicle may be carried at any one time

There are no diseases endemic to the Pitcairn Islands, however, the small Pitcairn community is vulnerable to diseases that may be carried by visitors. Prior to arrival passengers should be reminded to consult the shipā€™s doctor before arriving at Pitcairn if they are unwell.
