Marvão is a quiet town between Castelo de Vide and Portalegre, just a few kilometres away from Spain.

It sits atop the highest crest of the Serra de São Mamede. Originally called Ammaia, the hilltop village got its current name from Ibn Marúan, a Moorish warrior who sought refuge there during the 9th century. The Arab rule in the area lasted for many years until the Christian forces led by D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, emerged victorious in the military campaign of 1160/66 and reclaimed the territory.
