Silves, once the capital of the ancient Arab kingdom of Algarve, was a city of great importance.

Its stately appearance from that era can still be seen in its most iconic landmark, the red-hued castle, which begs to be explored. This castle, the largest in the Algarve and considered the most beautiful military monument from Islamic Portugal, sits atop a hill in Serra de Monchique. Its towers and walls were strategically placed to monitor and defend the territory, and today offers stunning views of the fertile fields covered with orange trees surrounding the River Arade. It was initially built by the Arabs, possibly on the ruins of a Roman fort from the 4th or 5th century.
