Ponta Delgada

Portugal - Madeira and Azores

Ponta Delgada, a city with a rich history and architectural heritage, overlooks a natural bay.

To explore the city, start with the Portas da Cidade (City Gates), which features three arches that connect the seafront area with Praça da República. The architecture is notable for its contrast between white walls and basalt details, adorned with lacy iron balconies. The city’s most iconic monuments include the 15th-century Church of São Sebastião, the Church of São José and the Church of São Pedro, and the Convent and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, where the image of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres (the Lord Christ of Miracles) is worshipped. Other notable sites include the former Jesuit College, the Palace of Sant’Ana (housing the Presidency of the Regional Government), the Carlos Machado Museum, the Fort of São Brás, the Town Hall, as well as the Micaelense Coliseum and Theatre, both of which have been renovated and well-preserved.
