Leiria

Leiria boasts unique attractions such as a river that defies gravity by flowing uphill, a tower that stands alone without a cathedral, a cathedral without a tower, and a High Street that curves instead of straight, as popularised by a Portuguese rhyme.

The town played a significant role in the conquest strategy of Santarém, Sintra, and Lisbon by Dom Afonso Henriques, the first Christian conqueror of Leiria, 1135 who founded the castle. Despite sporadic attacks by Moorish forces for over fifty years, Leiria was ultimately conquered during the reign of Dom Sancho I in the late 12th century, and the town was granted a charter by the king in 1195.
