The town played a significant role in the conquest strategy of Santarém, Sintra, and Lisbon by Dom Afonso Henriques, the first Christian conqueror of Leiria, 1135 who founded the castle. Despite sporadic attacks by Moorish forces for over fifty years, Leiria was ultimately conquered during the reign of Dom Sancho I in the late 12th century, and the town was granted a charter by the king in 1195.
