Mud Volcanoes

Romania - Bucharest & Southern Romania

Paclele Mari and Paclele Mici’s Mud Volcanoes are an exceptional combination of geological and botanical marvels and a renowned natural monument in Romania.

It spans a vast area of 30 hectares and has been designated as a protected reserve since 1924, being the only location in Europe where mud volcanoes can be found. The phenomena that occur are similar to that of traditional volcanoes. Still, instead of molten lava, hot gases from approximately 3,000 meters pass through a layer of clay soil and underground water. This results in a mixture of clay, water, and oil droplets that escapes outward.
