Braşov is a city located in the central part of Romania, about 160km north of Bucharest, nestled in the crook of the Carpathians.
Its medieval charm is still preserved in the old part of the city, with its narrow streets, ramparts, and ancient churches. Founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic knights and known initially as Kronstadt (the city of the crown), Braşov developed into a commercial and artisan centre during the 14th century, protected by a 3 km long wall that was 2 meters wide and 12 meters high. Today, only the North part of the wall and a series of gates and bulwarks remain, including the Weavers’ Bulwark, the largest in the country. The architecture of Braşov reflects the influence of its diverse population of Romanians, Germans, Hungarians, and Jews, as is the case in other Transylvanian cities.
