With several of its unused stations now developed into popular tourist attractions, the Hejaz railway was initially a narrow-gauge line running from Damascus to Medina, through the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia.
The original goal was to extend the line to the holy city of Makkah, making this railway part of the Ottoman railway network. Unfortunately, construction was interrupted due to the outbreak of World War I, and after nine years in use, it fell into disrepair.
