Located on the eastern horizon of Spišské Podhradie is the imposing Spiš Castle, a national cultural monument covering an area of over four hectares. While partially in ruins, this castle compound is one of Central Europe’s largest and was rightfully added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.
The construction of this medieval castle on a travertine hill began in the 12th century, with the oldest written reference dating back to 1120. Originally built as a boundary fort to protect the northern frontier of an early feudal Old Hungarian state, it later served as the seat of the head of the Spiš region for many centuries.
