Situated in the heart of historic Zululand in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, Mkuze Falls Private Game Reserve was established to protect the nyala antelope. Part of iSimangaliso Wetland Park’s dense scrub and open acacia plains covers 360 sq km. Lions were re-introduced in 2014, and the reserve is now home to the Big Five, cheetah, hippo and a vast number of plains animals.
The reserve has unique hides, several at waterholes. The pans, surrounded by fever trees, offer the best wildlife viewing in the country. There is a unique eco-system of riverine, wetland, lowveld bushveld and montane grassland providing the diversity for large quantities of bird and animal species. More than 400 bird species thrive here including the rare Pel’s fishing owl and is home to the Fish Eagle, Giant Kingfisher, Narina Trogon and the spectacular Purple-crested Lourie to mention a few.
