Cartagena

Spain - Barcelona and the East

The port of Cartagena, in the Mediterranean’s Costa Cálida, has been highly valued since the time of the Carthaginians.

Its strategic location on the coast of Murcia has attracted many cultures throughout history, each of which has left a unique mark on its artistic heritage. Exploring the city and its museums will take us through its history, intimately connected to the sea. The Carthaginians and Romans knew this maritime hub well, and it is now called Cartago Nova, derived from Latin. After being under Arab rule, Ferdinand III ‘the Saint’ reconquered the city and made it part of Castile. The port of Cartagena was a vital player in both the War of Succession and the Peninsular War.
