Murcia, a city of Arab origin, is surrounded by a chain of mountains and sits on a plain closely linked to the fertile lands around the river Segura.
The tower of the Cathedral emerges from the guilds’ streets, symbolising the city’s rich history. Although the region has been inhabited for over 2,000 years, the city was founded in 831 under the Caliphate when the Emir of Cordoba, Abd ar-Rahman II, commissioned a walled city on the banks of the river Segura to serve as the provincial capital.
