Svalbard and Jan Mayen

Svalbard may seem desolate and barren, with large open landscapes, sparse vegetation and endless glaciers. But the seasonal variations are enormous if you look beyond this first impression.

The long, dark season is replaced by bright winter months, which are replaced by a surprisingly mild summer with sun twenty-four hours a day.

During the Polar Night, in the months of darkness from October to January, the Northern Lights dominate the sky both day and night. The residents of Longyearbyen, who live in the worldā€™s northernmost urban community, tend to spend a lot of time at social gatherings. They gather at pubs, restaurants, concerts, or exhibitions and in each otherā€™s homes.
