Built in 2002, the Tamarind Village was the first ‘Lanna style’ boutique hotel of its kind in Chiang Mai. Architect Ong-Ard Satrabhandhu chose the site of an empty lot on historic Rachdamnoen Rd with views onto the 700 year old Wat Umong temple to construct the hotel. Situated at the heart of the old city of Chiang Mai, Tamarind Village’s strong sense of place and identity reflects its northern Thai setting and the simple beauty of the local Lanna culture. Surrounded by ancient temples and historic sites, the hotel’s architecture clearly draws on the past for inspiration while interpreting traditional forms and design with a fresh, contemporary twist.
Tamarind Village’s rooms and suites are situated around a series of flower-filled courtyards, giving each room a sense of relaxed space. Decorated with simple yet elegant touches, the interiors draw on contemporary design for the runners, throw rugs and accessories and contrast the bold visual patterns of hill tribe fabrics against white bedding and polished concrete floors to striking effect. All rooms feature modern, fully equipped bathrooms and offer guests a sense of style and place that is in perfect keeping with the hotel’s location at the very heart of Chiang Mai’s old city.
The excellent Ruen Tamarind Restaurant serves a mix of local, classic Thai and international dishes all in a prefect romantic setting. The Village Spa is a serene sanctuary for guests to relax and be pampered in perfect privacy and tranquility.
The Tamarind Village is one of the “boutique originals” and the best in its class. Location is great, deep in the old town near temples and local life with the buzzing restaurants just a short walk or tuk tuk ride away. A firm Oasis favourite.
