The Tinajani Canyon – Peru’s Lost World!
Rarely do we hear about new destinations in Peru; hotels, hikes, adventures of course and sometimes even “new” Inca ruins such as the breathtaking “Horned Fortress” of Waqrapucara. But entire regions in a country like Peru, the face of South America? So when we first read about the Tinajani Canyon and a new safari-style tented camp, we were intrigued and decided to pay a visit – and simply WOW!
High in Peru’s altiplano, some 3 hours south of Lake Titicaca, the Tinajani Canyon is a wild, other-wordly landscape of soaring sandstone towers and cliff-faces sculpted over the millennia by rain and wind. Steeped in history and mythology, where ancient, pre-Incan burial tombs sit alongside eerie 5m tall Puya Raimondi trees (the world’s largest species of bromeliads), Tinajani is a true lost world under clear Andean skies, a million miles off the beaten track.
The canyon is dotted with lonely ranches and wandering herds of alpaca yet at the end of a bumpy track surrounded by stone monoliths, you stumble upon Tinajani, a brand new all-inclusive tented camp that threw open its doors in April 2025. Raised on wooden platforms aside an old adobe farmhouse, the 6 private en-suite safari-style “campamentos” each feature a outdoor deck and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Here, based on fully inclusive stays, guests can enjoy photo-safaris, or hike, bike and explore the canyon’s hidden corners and resident wildlife, enjoying picnics and wonderful panoramic vistas along the way.
Equally impressive at such a remote location, the menu at Tinajani embraces traditional Altiplano cuisine inspired by ancestral recipes. Each evening, you can sit round an open fire and enjoy steaming bowls Andean soup and slow-cooked stews all rounded off with a sweet touch of api or a homemade crumble.
The Tinajani Canyon sits in a remote corner of Peru’s highlands which bridges the gap beautifully between Lake Titicaca, the Colca Canyon and Arequipa – each home to Tinajani’s sister properties Puqio, Titilaka and Cirqa respectively.
