koutammakou
Founded in the 17th century by people fleeing the slave-snatching of Benin’s Dahomeyan king, Koutammakou has a distinctive collection of two-story fortress-like mud houses or ‘Tatas’ built to defend against invaders. Listed in 2004 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this district is one of the most picturesque in the country, with intense sunlight and stunning mountain landscapes.

Visit the capital city’s National Museum for an excellent historical and cultural overview of Togo. Walk to the Grand Marche and Cathedral and get a glimpse of everyday life in the city. The Grand Marche typical of a West African market, is a lively, vibrant and full of character.
