Matmata is a must-see town, and its fame comes from the unusual houses. Instead of building the homes vertically, they were dug into the ground. Each house forms a circular crater, the family’s courtyard.
Stand on the edge and gaze at the hole usually two stories deep, complete with doors, staircases and openings to nearby caves. But there are no windows here. Scrutinise the vaulted ceilings, round shelves cut directly into walls and the use of strong colours together with chalked walls.
Explore the interior of the Hotel Sidi Driss used as the location for the first Star Wars movie, and again for the Attack of the Clones.
