Known as Tralleis in ancient times, the city of Aydın is the homeland of tasteful figs and is also the centre of ancient sculptures inspiring modern art.

The remains of Aydin date from the second century AD, then sometime after 1186, the city came under Seljuk rule. The local museum displays artefacts from the different periods of its history.
